What is Coaching?
Welcome! I’m so glad you are here. I’m Beth Felsen, a trained life coach. I focus on helping students and adults with autism thrive. After seeing so many families struggle to navigate life transitions, I made it my mission to support young adults with autism. With the right resources and support system, many of these struggles can be minimized or avoided completely.
Now you might be wondering – what is coaching? Great question. Let’s start at the beginning.
Coaching is a process where a trained guide (the coach) helps another person (the client or coachee) achieve goals.
Coaches are trained to be good listeners and ask powerful questions to help clients articulate and prioritize goals. Once goals are identified, coaches use their skills to help clients define the specific steps needed to achieve these goals. Coaches meet regularly with clients to provide support and accountability.
Coaching is action-oriented and future focused. The coach can help identify the strengths and tools the client already possesses that can be instrumental in achieving goals. The coach can also help the client develop and nurture less well-developed skills.
Coaching is all about unlocking potential.
Often people turn to coaching when they have an idea of where they want to go (a goal) but are not confident in the steps to take to get “there.” When children are younger, they may turn to parents and other trusted adults for advice and help with goal planning. As they become young adults who crave independence and a greater role in decision-making, turning to parents becomes less desirable. Coaches can help bridge the transition to independence for young adults.
Coaching can be useful in any life stage. In my experience, I’ve found it’s particularly important in the late teens/early twenties. When a young adult learns they can control their own future and reach their goals, it creates a positive habit that lays the foundation for future successes. On the other hand, if this life stage does not go well, it can take significant work to get back on the right track.
